This was snapped at Queens Lake just before things took a bit of a turn. The aurora was putting on a show, the vibes were high — then the clouds rolled in from the northeast like uninvited guests, and the aurora started to fizzle out. So, naturally, we made a last-minute dash down the coast to Grants Head hoping for a better view. Instead, we got rain. Lots of it.
Still not ready to give up, we consulted the sacred weather apps and decided to try our luck even further down the coast — to the flood-affected wetlands near Coopernook (because where better to chase lights in the sky than a swamp?). Spoiler: the aurora ghosted us completely.
Just when we were about to call it a night, I walked around the front of my car — in the pitch dark — because the others were still shooting and I couldn’t turn on a headlamp. That’s when I heroically disappeared into a deep, water-filled drain. Full submersion. 10/10 dive. Phone in my pocket = dead. Camera on tripod = possibly zombified (it’s weather-sealed, but we’ll see). Shins = grazed and bruised. Dignity = floating somewhere in the drain.
At least I got this shot before the universe decided to humble me. 🙃
